The NAGF has moved!

Welcome to the North American Generator Forum

The North American Generator Forum (NAGF) was founded in 2009 as a vehicle for generator owners and/or operators to address issues related to registration, compliance, standards development and other NERC-related topics. In 2013, the North American Generator Forum, Inc. became a non-profit, dues-based corporation.

We provide entities who are generator owners and operators in North America a means to collaborate and communicate with FERC, NERC, the Regional Entities, the Canadian Provinces and other organizations with missions similar to ours, with the ultimate goal of improving the reliability of the bulk power system.

Said: : "Bradley, that's a really good question. Per the NERC definition, a lockout (86) relay is part of the Protection System when it's actuated by a "Protective Relay that responds to an electrical quantity" since it is then part of the "Contro...
Said: : "I agree Tom, you should never get a finding for not reporting 63s under PRC-004, but I really do not see it exposing any risk to report them, so really that is up to the entity if it wishes to report them or not. Now, what happens if your...
Said: : "Sandy, we do the same thing as it makes sense to put all the required testing in the same program. However, just because you test them in the same program to meet PRC-005, doesn't mean that they have to be reported the same way under PRC-...
Said: : "Tom, Our Power Agency took a different approach and added all BES Sudden Pressure and Bucholz relays to our Protective Relay maintenance program. We function “trip” test when performing our DC Circuitry tests. Sent via Groupsite Mobile."
Said: : "Sandy, take a look at the definition of Protection System in the Glossary of Terms - copied below for your convenience. Protection System - Protective relays which respond to electrical quantities, Communications systems necessary for co...
Said: : "Tom, please see: NERC PRC-005-6 Protective Relay, Reclosing and Sudden Pressure Relaying.Maintenance. Am I missing something? Thank you Sent via Groupsite Mobile."
Said: : "The title to PRC-004-5(i) is "Protection System Misoperation Identification and Correction". It's Applicability in Section 4.2.1 is, "Protection Systems for BES Elements, ..." Sudden Pressure Relays are NOT part of a "Protection System"....
Said: : "Bradley/Don, In my “Pre-NERC” compliance days, I have seen both scenarios. Seismic event causing false tripping of multiple transformers and internal winding fault resulting in pressure relief device burping oil. We did a follow up on SPR...

Said: : "I agree ref. the, "operate as intended," language in the Misoperation definition that, while one doesn't actually want SPRs to be triggered by seismic events or close-in faults on the transmission system, susceptibilities that are inheren...
Said: : "Sandy, My take on it did the device not behave as it was designed to. In a seismic event, if the motion of the oil was significant to actuate the switch, then that in itself is not a misoperation. You may go and test the transformer (oil ...
Said: : "Ameren would also be interested in hearing about members experiences with self-logging. Specifically what criteria were used to assess the internal controls program for self-logging approval. Thanks Brad Arnold barnold@ameren.com"
Said: : "Questions: SPR or Bucholz relay misoperation: 1) SPR or Bucholz relay false trips GSU transformer during a local seismic event? Would this be considered a relay misoperation? 2) SPR or Bucholz relay does not operate when a transformer fai...
Said: : "Be careful with train of thought. That logic can bring balance of plant into the mix. There is a reason that "electrical quantities" is specified. If you are having too much trouble with the Buchholz you can replace it or change the pr...
Said: : "I feel considering SPR relays performance responsive to PRC-004 follows the intent of this standard. If it were me I would also include Buchholz and T monitoring functions. The discussion also leads to the question whether Arc Flas Protec...
Said: : "I believe the right answer is, you won't have a finding if you don't report a Sudden Pressure Relay that caused a misoperation. The real question is, should you report the issue with that kind of a relay? The purpose of the PRC-004 - Ide...
Said: : "PRC-005 is spelled out to specifically apply to Protection Systems, Sudden Pressure devices, and Reclosing Relays. They did this because Protection System by definition only includes relays that respond to electrical quantities (as well a...
Said: : "Agreed. If it is a BES Transformer and the Buchholz tells the relay to trip it is not a misoperation regardless of whether there was a transformer event or not. A Buchholz misoperation is not a misoperation. If its associated relay mi...
Said: : "I would agree with Don's statement. This question has been brought up before and WECC has confirmed at their recent Misoperation Webinar that sudden pressure relays are not reportable within PRC-004. PRC-004 addresses only those prote...
Said: : "I agree that three categories of components are identified in PRC-005, yet the dc control circuitry used to accomplish the tripping from the Sudden Pressure relays is often the same circuitry used for the protective relays. For this reas...
