Welcome to the North American Generator Forum

The North American Generator Forum (NAGF) was founded in 2009 as a vehicle for generator owners and/or operators to address issues related to registration, compliance, standards development and other NERC-related topics. In 2013, the North American Generator Forum, Inc. became a non-profit, dues-based corporation.

We provide entities who are generator owners and operators in North America a means to collaborate and communicate with FERC, NERC, the Regional Entities, the Canadian Provinces and other organizations with missions similar to ours, with the ultimate goal of improving the reliability of the bulk power system.

Said: : "The "Emergency" criterion in COM-002-4 R6 needs to be understood in the NERC context. People tend to think of disasters and the like, but in our area (PJM) their Emergency Operations manual includes such ordinary events as hot weather, c...
Said: : "When I was a gen dispatcher I would literally ask the question if there was any doubt. I would say, "Is this an operating instruction/directive?""
Said: : "Does anyone else run into the issue of the determining when exactly the BA,RC, or TOP is giving an operating instruction? With IRO-001 and TOP-001, I suppose it is necessary for evidence to document if the instruction came from the BA, ...
Said: : "At NRG, we are using three part communication for all operating instructions as conveyed by the BA or TOP. Generally, as a GOP, the facility is not aware of emergency conditions in the system and it is difficult for operators to assess t...
Said: : "The NERC rational and justification document it states the same protocols are to be used in connection with the issuance of Operating Instructions for all conditions non-emergency and emergency. For audit enforcement and compliance opera...
Said: : "EDPR NA has adopted the same approach - three part communications during any interactions with the respective entities - that removes the need to determine whether you need to use it or not and it is a good practice anyway."
Said: : "Steve, the definition of Operating Instruction states that any command to move a unit is an Operating Instruction. The definition includes the language "... to change the state, status, output, or input..." The distinction then becomes a...
Said: : "Hello Shannon, Speaking about Low Impact only facilities, you can VLAN your IT and OT environments behind your perimeter firewall and maintain CIP compliance. There are no PCAs in Low Impact or compliance requirements to have separate IT ...
Said: : "We have this in our low sites, but have also isolated our 15 minute system with data diodes. From our CIP manager:"
Said: : "For Medium and High Impact facilities you have to identify an EAP (Electronic Access Point) this is typically a firewall. If the switch is below the EAP then each network attached to it would potentially be in scope. You could be accident...
Said: : "Hi Shannon, We only have Low Impact in our Generation Department. We have avoided this scenario because additional switches are cheaper and easier than any discussion with an auditor and the following fines. We also configure our own sw...
Said: : "William   We have done this kind of work for others in a similar situation.  We would like the opportunity to discuss your needs to see if it would fit your needs. "
Said: : "I reached out to a contact at WECC and they do not want anyone sending in Operations/Misoperation data on SP and/or Bucholtz Relays through MIDAS. See the note below. "I can see where Brad is coming from, however, he clearly understand...
Said: : "In your scenario, the operator turned the 101, and the trip coil failed to operate. That would likely be maintenance and not a relay initiated function. Reporting anything during PM or CM is not required as detailed in the Standard. As ...
