The NAGF has moved!

Welcome to the North American Generator Forum

The North American Generator Forum (NAGF) was founded in 2009 as a vehicle for generator owners and/or operators to address issues related to registration, compliance, standards development and other NERC-related topics. In 2013, the North American Generator Forum, Inc. became a non-profit, dues-based corporation.

We provide entities who are generator owners and operators in North America a means to collaborate and communicate with FERC, NERC, the Regional Entities, the Canadian Provinces and other organizations with missions similar to ours, with the ultimate goal of improving the reliability of the bulk power system.

RECENT ACTIVITY

Said: : "It has been known to occur - From Paper Summary of Revision, IEEE C37.119-2016 Guide for breaker Failure Protection For example, open breaker flashover is most likely to occur just prior to synchronizing or just after the generator is rem...
Said: : "Steven, Understand, the only pole flashover I have seen was on a 72kv SF6 breaker at a hydro station at Approx 6000’ elevation. The alarm was a Lo SF6 pressure and when the LoLo trip occurred a pole flashed over. We questioned the Lo & L...
Said: : "We have not had a generator breaker flashover occur on our system. I am just wondering if anyone has had a flashover occur during synchronizing or shutdown where the low-gas alarm had not operated prior to the flashover."
Said: : "Steven, More information needed? Ambient temp? Was the breaker closed generator online? Was the breaker open generator off? Was generator being synchronized? Was operations switching adjacent disconnects? Was there another fault involved?...

Said: : "The SDT at one time included the word "turbine" in the draft of a proposed update for FAC-008, but removed it (see NERC's Consideration of Comments documents) to avoid creating the mistaken impression that mechanical limitations come into...
Said: : "We have measured the current from the neutral CT during loaded conditions. The three phases are not exactly balanced, so we are able to observe some low level sinusoidal current which proves that the CT is providing a replica of the resi...
Said: : "Dave, Internally we have discussed this issue multiple times. In reference to neutral current transformers (GSU H0), we have done the following: 1) The GSU HO neutral CT is connected to a microprocessor relay (SEL300G), we have set thi...
Said: : "We too do all our relay testing at the same time as an outage needs to be scheduled, mod/demod considerations and we know everything was in good order X number of years ago. Typically we do a 3 year cycle as that is the outage schedule a...
Said: : "Simple, you have ONE number you can point to as THE capability of the unit for marketing and everyone else that is looking for an output value except for environmental issues as they want the gross output. Our rational stems from an inter...
Said: : "We typically test our non PRC-005 relays at the same time as our PRC-005 covered relays as a matter good utility practice and for cost savings for mobilization/demobilization of the testing company. We then ask the testing company to pro...
Said: : "Upon reading some of the responses to the original poster, it seems like there is a variety of opinions as to what equipment should be considered part of the facility rating. A Facility is defined per NERC Glossary of Terms as a "set of e...

Said: : "Steve, I am saying we have taken the unit market capability (ICAP) and calculated MVA based upon PF and come up with a number higher than the limiting equipment MVA."
Said: : "To clarify your question regarding the generator, are you saying that you've taken the generator nameplate MW, calculated MVA based upon PF, and came up with a different number than the MVA listed on the nameplate?"
Said: : "1. Entergy uses MVA as the base for our facility ratings to allow for a common comparison. Where MVA is not listed, we use voltage and current to calculate MVA. 2. We do not base our ratings on MW, but the OEM rated MVA rating. 3. We do ...
